This wall map of Winchester about 1800 shows at a scale of 1:2500 the street names, the cathedral and cathedral close, the parish churches, houses, Winchester College and other schools, hospitals, places of entertainment, and land use both within the walls and in the surrounding suburbs.
The Ordnance Survey plan of Winchester surveyed in 1869-70 is the earliest accurate map of the city. The wall map was compiled using the OS of 1869-70 as its base, and revising it back to about 1800 by reference to all known existing evidence. It will be published in sections with an account of city from Roman times to about 1800 as a volume in the Atlas of British Historic Towns series, also appearing as Winchester Studies 11. The wall map is available at either 1:2500 or 1:5000 via www.mapsinternational.co.uk
